Chapter 17
Rayna’s mind was busy trying to make connections that she wasn’t even sure were possible as she sat in her office staring at her computer screen. Could the Tennessee Valley Authority be producing tritium rods secretly? If so, with the Lovell farm being downstream from the plant, that might explain the tritium in the soil samples. The problem was that some of those samples were taken quite a ways from the water, which wouldn’t make sense if the water was the only source of contamination. Would it? Did all of this somehow tie into the UFO sightings? The dead horse might be explained by lots of tritium contamination, but not the drop from high above the trees. That could not be explained by simple radiation poisoning.
She picked up her cell phone to call Derek and it rang in her hand. She blinked in surprise. It was her sister. “Hi, Dawn!”
“Hey!” Dawn sounded cheerful, but the tone in her voice didn’t match the words she spoke. “I have a bone to pick with you!”
“What did I do this time?”
“You neglected to tell me about the hot, new man in your life.”
Rayna rolled her eyes. “There’s nothing to tell. Who told you anyway?”
“Just because I don’t live in your town doesn’t mean I don’t know people. I can keep an eye on you without even being in the same county!” Rayna knew she was right, but that didn’t stop her from trying to keep things private when she knew she’d get crap for them. “Why are you keeping him a secret?”
“I’m not. I just had other things on my mind.” Rayna clicked out of the weather model updates and opened up a game of solitaire on her computer. It was her habit to play while on long, drawn out phone calls with family. This call was shaping up to be a bad one already. “Besides, there’s nothing to tell. He’s just another guy in my life. It’s not like I don’t already have enough.” Of course, Rayna didn’t really think Wolf was just another guy, but she’d been down that road before with her sister. It always ended the same. Rayna would be rejected, and her sister would give the useless clichés about there being plenty of fish in the sea and the time not being right or her being too good for the guy. Those words never helped her feel any less hurt, and frankly, she was tired of hearing them.
“You have a lot of guy friends. I’ll give you that, but you obviously don’t have enough men in your life as far as romance goes. If you’re not looking at the ones who practically fall in your lap, you’ll never find one!” Dawn offered even more unhelpful advice. She went on for several minutes before Rayna stopped her.
“Do you know how it feels to have that voice of self-doubt in your head convincing you that you will spend your life single and die never having known what it was
